Mjolnir County (Encyclopaedia Chapter)

The sixth chapter of the Encyclopaedia describes the grand Land of War - Mjolnir County. Boasting huge fortresses, castles and cities, this is without doubt the second most developed and influental county of them all.

Chapter 6 – Mjolnir County – Land of War

The vast area of the south-eastern White Realm is one of the most beautiful and fortified parts of the Realm – the County of Mjolnir, also known as the Mjolnir County and “the Land of War”.

Geographically, the County of Mjolnir’s borders are as follow: The Silverstream to the west, the Steppes of Ortin to the south (the steppes are the piece of land to the very southern border of the Realm), the Sea of Strength to the east (the Bay of Ortin is a part of the county), the Gates of Glory to the north and the Echoing River to the east-northeast.
The county hosts large cultivated fields, thick forests, amongst these is the Fillia Forest – one of the largest in the whole Realm, and several smaller rivers and streams. Hills are also common, and the Thunder Mountain stands as a lone peak – the highest point of the county. There are hundreds of smaller settlements and villages in the Mjolnir County, and various larger cities and fortifications. Some of the more noticeable villages and towns include Silverton, Echo town, Filliaton and Port Village. Silverton is the centre of silver-mining, which happens in the hills to its west. Export of silver happens from the little town, and its citizens are skilled miners. Echo town is a small town in the north-eastern corner of the county, near the Echo Tower. The village has been under Shiverland control once, but is today a part of the Mjolnir County. Echo town hosts a famous market event – the Week-long Market of Echo. The market is a vast event, where merchants and traders from all over the Realm gather to trade, buy and party at this little village. Even merchants from Weissland come to the event, sailing up the Echo River.
Filliaton is a smaller, isolated settlement, but its export of some of the finest timber has made its citizens rather rich. The town is located in the northern outskirts of the Fillia Forest.
The Port Village is the second-largest port town in the whole Realm. It is still classified as “village”, but it is in truth a large port city. The Village is a gathering place for merchants from all over the Realm – nonetheless from Weissland. Export of fish is also important in Port Village. The city is not vastly fortified, but hosts a relative large defensive force, and several defensive structures. The Port Village is also a known place for its host of various guilds and mercenary groups. The motto of the “guild part” of the city is: “In our city, war can be bought!”

The larger cities include: Thunderton, Ortin Port, Barrackton and Seastedt.
Thunderton is the main city of the county, and although it is not marked on the map of the White Realm, the city of Thunderton is an important metropolis of the south-eastern realm. Thunderton lies directly north of Castle Mjolnir and Thunder Mountain. Thunderton holds a university amongst other important buildings, and is directly tied to Castle Mjolnir (the reason for the lack of cartography is because Thunderton is accepted as a part of Castle Mjolnir – on the map) and holds the largest city defensive force in the whole Realm – only beaten by that of the White City itself. Thunderton contains large libraries of documented battles and tactics of war. The best blacksmiths, horses and combat trainers live within the walls of this glorious city, and the metropolis is worthy of the nickname – City of War.
Orin Port is the largest port city of the White Realm and hosts a lot of merchants, exotic merchandise and many different services. Ortin Port is definitely a large economic centre, but it is also a very “war-oriented” city as most of the county. The largest shipyards are found in and around Ortin Port – and Ortin is also the host of the fleet of the White Realm. The city has seen a lot of combat and is truly battle-hardened. Pirates, marauders and even Defiled Kingdom armies have invaded and tried to take Ortin Port – attempting to make a successful invasion on the White Realm, but the soldiers of Ortin have always stood their ground and defended Ortin Port successfully.
Barrackton is not that large a city. It is a standard-sized city with nothing exceptional from a cultural point of view. The city is only known for one thing – the Great Barracks. Barrackton lies within the walls of this enormous fort and provide food, clothing and other services (such as library and prostitutes) to the inhabitants of the vast Barracks.
Seastedt is the least known of the major cities in County Mjolnir. The city lies to the very west of the Seacastle and is an important city for the science of the Realm. Many inventions spring from minds of Seastedt-citizens and many improvements to e.g. artillery and armour are made in Seastadt’s great University. Most of the scientific explorations made inside the University of Seastedt are within the themes of military equipment, naval warfare and military architecture.

The cities of Mjolnir County show a lot of its reputation for development and preparation for war, but the four Great Fortifications of Mjolnir are the core of this war-oriented county – Castle of Mjolnir, The Great Barracks, Seacastle and Ortin Castle.

The Castle of Mjolnir is without doubt the core of the county. It was the first structure to be built in the county, and the structure was ordered to be constructed by the Lord of the Realm himself. The castle would be a great stronghold in the south-eastern part of the Realm, and any invasion from the Sea of Strength would have to overtake this great fortress in order to continue through the realm. But the Castle also had (and still has) another task – to be the headquarters of the famous, glorious, honourable Warriors of Mjolnir. These great commanders and warriors are the heart of the White Army, and have, since their arrival to the Castle, done great deeds to the benefit of the White Realm. The Warriors are under command of one of the most trusted Knights in the Realm – Loremaster Ariakas. The Castle of Mjolnir hosts an enormous army, and is always ready to go to war if it has to. The name “Mjolnir” is a mystery to many – but its origin comes from the old Norse Mythology – the hammer of the thundergod Tor was named Mjolnir and it was always pictured as the great hammer of war – the Warhammer. Ariakas was one of the first members of the White Counsil to show great interest in this warhammer, and was therefore, after acts of devotion and loyalty, promoted to Warrior of Mjolnir, thus giving birth to the new order. The lone mountain next to the castle was named Thunder Mountain, because of its symbol to Tor, and the capital city of the county was named Thunderton. Even today the sacred Warhammer, which is kept deep within the Castle of Mjolnir, is an almost holy artefact to those under command of Ariakas.

The Castle has been besieged a few times; always the sieges have failed, and the effectiveness of the warriors within the castle has been shown more than enough times.
The Captain of Mjolnir – Ariakas is not a bloodthirsty, merciless warlord as many picture him. He is the Loremaster of the Realm, and he let a house be built outside the walls of his castle. Here, he could study in peace – and so could anyone else, who paid the Loremaster’s House a visit. The house contains a huge collection of books of all kinds, and is called the Centre of Knowledge by many. The House is a symbol of the County of Mjolnir as a cultural and scientific county as well as a county of warriors. Few notice however, that the House is formed (from above) exactly as Tor’s hammer – Mjolnir – which is another symbol of the Loremaster’s devotion to the warhammer.

The Great Barracks are less poetic than the Castle of Mjolnir. The castle was constructed some years after the Castle of Mjolnir, and it has one sole purpose in today’s White Realm – to host a great amount of combat-ready, tough, brave and loyal warriors of the Realm. Young soldiers are trained there, and most remain there – ready to go to war or to defend the Realm if needed. The Castle’s location was chosen by the Lord. Shiverland had fallen into darkness, and a stronghold to the borders of Shiverland was needed. Therefore the Great Barracks were built where they stand today. The bitter battles between Shiverlendings and White Realmers have been fought both on the Great Battleground and before the walls of the Great Barracks. The war between the Realm and Shiverland has always been a war between the Great Barracks and Shiverland, and so far the sturdy warriors of the Realm have stood their ground.

The Seacastle is the smallest of the Four Great Castles, but it is one of the most important. The Seacastle is a large, thick wall, which forms a bastion against the invaders from the other side of the Sea of Strength. The wall has stood the test of war during various small invasions, and has proven to be quite effective. The “repeating bolt throwers”, invented by the scholars of the University of Seastedt are the main defensive weapons of the defenders of the Seacastle. These bolt throwers fire incredibly fast, and have power enough to tear down invading ships, before the armies on the fleet even reach the coast.

The last of the great four is the Ortin Castle. Many picture the Four Castles as a shield (Castle of Mjolnir – the core castle) and three spears pointing at those who would dare to invade the Realm (Great Barracks to the north-east, Seacastle to the east and Ortin Castle to the south-east).
Ortin Castle is a castle and a city, and the city is actually an economic centre, where foreign merchants from the southern lands travel up the Silverstream and trade with White Realmers in Ortin Castle. Usually the Realmers trade with silver, which is transported from Silverton’s mines down the Silverstream to the markets of Ortin. The silver trade has made Ortin a rich city, and to protect its goods, the wall was raised around the city and the castle. Ortin Castle also functions as stronghold to the south and the east, and Ortin is really a frontier of the Realm – giving it great responsibility on the shoulders of the defenders of Ortin Castle. Few invasions from the south have found place, but one of them was nearly successful. Orin was besieged, and if the Army of Mjolnir had not reinforced Ortin as quick as they did, the beautiful city and castle would have fallen to the Beasts of the south.

The County of Mjolnir is definitely one of the most glorious, fortified and greatest counties of the White Realm. Many say that in glory and strength, Mjolnir County comes second – only bested by the Capital County. For Mjolnir County might be best known for its incredible warfare capabilities, but trade and culture are important parts of the County as well. White Realmers respect this fact, as they respect the leader of the County – Ariakas for the strong and wise leader he is.
As engraved on the gate of Castle of Mjolnir:
“Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further!”
Meaning: You may have come this far in the Realm, but you will not go further. For the Castle of Mjolnir will always stand its ground. Always!
